We used to order from Meyer. This last time we had a very bad experience with our chicks. I ordered instead from Murray McMurray, and these chicks were the fastest growing chicks I have ever raised (going on 12 years of chicken culture). We raise Speckled Sussex and always do straight run for the full “farm life” experience.
I’ve never ordered from Murray McMurtry but I saw a sow the land video where he toured the facility. Why are speckled Sussex your favorite? What do you do with extra cockerels?
We raise speckled Sussex because they are a dual purpose breed, we don’t just raise them for eggs. They are also good at foraging when they free range in the yard. Every few years we order around 25 chicks, raise them up and pick one rooster to keep and process the rest for meat. Lots of practice and YouTube videos taught us how to process chickens, and it is a family event. The kids help too. Have ordered three times from Meyer. This year, when the chicks arrived half were dead and the rest were dying. Within a few hours we had 25 dead two day old chicks. I saw another post on social media where a lady had the same issue with her speckled Sussex from Meyer. They refunded us, so I don’t have any complaints, but I think they have an issue with that breed currently. I have been very pleased with our chicks from Murray this year.
That’s a bummer! I’ll try Murray mcmurray next year. I just really like the assortments. Today I sold 6 chicks for $20 each and they’re not even 5 weeks old yet so that’s a pretty good rate of return 🐥

I’m very tempted I see they have bielefelders in stock for 2023 (already sold out of BCM pullets😭). I like assortment because I’m cheap. How cool is this idea https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/fly_tyer_special.html
I wish roosters would be quieter and lay eggs
